About Patrick van den Broek

Born and raised on the East Cost, Patrick spent his childhood years throughout New England and New York. Drawing from a very young age, art has been an integral part of his life.

Patrick received his first format artistic education at Deerfield Academy, eventually winning the prestigious Boston Globe Gold Key for Art in 1992 and exhibiting in various New England galleries. Volunteering as a Big Brother in the community, playing lacrosse and fine art kept him busy through those high school years. Upon graduation, Patrick continued his studies at the University of Notre Dame.

Patrick received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Notre Dame, focusing on the development cycles of aquatic and marine invertebrates. He still maintained his art, with a variety of course work, as well as working as an illustrator for The Observer, the Notre Dame student newspaper. He continued his service, volunteering at the South Bend Juvenile Detention Center. He spent his summers studying at marine laboratories, at Shoals Marine Lab through UNH and Cornell and the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology in Coos Bay, Oregon.

While at Notre Dame, Patrick and few mountain biking friends founded the Notre Dame Mountain Bike Race Team (NDMBRT). Gaining club status with the University, the NDMBRT raced our team in the Midwest race circuit, with the official ND on their jerseys. With top 20 finishes, Notre Dame qualified four riders to complete in the Collegic Mountain Bike National Championships in Durango, Colorado. Passing two riders in the last half mile, Patrick finished the season ranked 71st in the country collegially and the top ranked rider for the brand new Notre Dame Mountain Bike Race Team.

Upon graduation, Patrick moved to Colorado and continued competitively Cross Country Mountain Bike Racing. The Winter Park Hill Climb, The Breckenridge Fall Classic and The Bear Creek Classic are just some of the races he competed in. Patrick also raced Cyclo-cross qualifying for the US Cyclo-cross National Championship in Morrison, Colorado. Racing the for the BikeSmart Team in 7th Annual 24 Hours of Moab, Patrick anchored the four man team to a top 40 finish. After a few moderately successful seasons, it was time to pursue some different endeavors.

Patrick focused once again on his art, attending The Art Institute of Colorado. With a 4.0 GPA and Dean's List throughout every semester, Patrick graduated at the top of his class, winning the Portfolio Excellence Award for his animated short, The Couch Potato and Mr. Bun. He was soon hired as the Art Director of FasTracKids International, responsible for the storyboarding, branding and management of the 64 CD-ROM package. With the package complete and delivered, he moved on to Los Angeles to pursue the animation industry.

While in Los Angeles, Patrick was drawing with a variety of animation studios in the area, as well as pitching animated shorts to studios. After a worthwhile experience in the "City of Angels", Patrick moved back to Colorado and joined the newly inflating Denver dot-com bubble. When that particular ship sank, he founded Isilus, Inc., a leading eBusiness web application firm in Denver.

Continually painting, his collection has grown and he has pieces in private and public collections around the country. He was selected as the exclusive artist for the Colorado Culinary Series, creating the original art and branding for the three summer culinary festivals for the past four year running. He was selected as an emerging artist for the 2006 Cherry Creek Arts Festival and exhibited at the 2005 Telluride Culinary & Arts Festival.
